The Myth of Oil-Fueled Conquests: A Tale of Two Invasions

The Iraq War: A Democracy Mission or an Oil Grab?

The Iraq War of 2003, led by George W. Bush, was officially justified as a mission to establish democracy. However, many critics on the left argued that the real motive was to gain control of Iraq's vast oil reserves. This narrative of a 'war for oil' has been a subject of intense debate.

But here's the twist: even those opposed to the war and skeptical of the administration's intentions, like myself, didn't fully buy into this 'oil grab' theory. The primary motive, it seemed, was a political maneuver to boost Bush's reelection chances through a grand military victory. And some political scientists agree that this was indeed a successful strategy.

Venezuela: A Trumpian Oil Fantasy

Fast forward to the Trump administration, and we witness a different narrative unfold in Venezuela. Following the controversial capture of Nicolás Maduro, Trump's press conference was notably devoid of any mention of democracy. Instead, he repeatedly emphasized the word 'oil', a whopping 27 times, stating their intention to reclaim what they believed was rightfully theirs.

However, the situation in Venezuela is not a straightforward 'war for oil.' It's a pursuit of an oil fantasy. The immense wealth Trump envisions in Venezuela's oil fields is largely imaginary.

Venezuela is said to possess the world's largest oil reserves, estimated at 300 billion barrels. What's intriguing is that these reported reserves tripled during Hugo Chavez's presidency, not due to new discoveries, but a reclassification of the Orinoco Belt's heavy oil as 'proved.' This reclassification, as Torsten Slok points out, doesn't reflect the actual recoverability or economic viability of the oil.

The reality check comes when we examine Venezuela's oil production. Despite the massive increase in reported reserves, production soon plummeted, indicating that the country's oil infrastructure was deteriorating and would require significant investments to revive.

Trump's suggestion of reimbursing oil companies for investing in Venezuela, a nation he falsely claims to control, is a stark shift from the initial narrative. It implies subsidizing the oil industry's ventures with taxpayer money, a far cry from the promised riches.

And here's where it gets controversial: billionaire Paul Singer, a Trump supporter, acquired Citgo, a former subsidiary of Venezuela's state oil company, just before the potential lifting of the U.S. embargo on Venezuelan crude. This move could result in a massive windfall for Singer, seemingly unrelated to Venezuela's oil production.

Trump's belief in the value of Venezuela's oil is outdated, as oil prices have been historically low due to fracking. The breakeven price for fracked oil is around $62 per barrel, making investments in the Orinoco Belt, with its estimated breakeven of over $80, a risky venture even without political instability.

In essence, Trump's belief in capturing a lucrative oil prize in Venezuela is a fantasy, regardless of the country's political leadership.

What do you think? Was the Iraq War truly about oil, or was it a political strategy? And is Trump's Venezuela venture a realistic pursuit of oil wealth or a costly fantasy? Share your thoughts and let's spark a thoughtful discussion!
